Garret Gabriel Caouette of Murrieta Dies in Rear-End 15 Freeway Crash, Kevin May Arrested
Temecula, CA (April 23, 2021) – On Thursday, a Toyota Prius driver died, and police arrested Kevin May, a 47-year-old Fontana man, in a DUI crash on Interstate 15.
Moreover, the fatal accident occurred at around 12:03 p.m. in the number 4 lane, between Rancho California Road and the Overland Drive overcrossing.
Apparently, May drove a Hino bobtail box truck at an unknown speed and failed to see stopped traffic ahead.
As a result, his vehicle crashed into a Toyota Prius. Subsequently, both of the vehicles burst into flames.
Unfortunately, the Prius was pinned between the Hino and a big rig that was stopped for traffic.
Fire responders quickly extinguished the flames and located the driver, 18-year-old Garret Caouette, dead in the wreckage.
Even so, the 47-year-old Bloomington woman driving the big rig was not injured in the 15 Freeway accident.
May, who was hauling furniture during that time, was hospitalized with moderate injuries at Inland Valley Medical Center.
Furthermore, officers arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Meanwhile, officers continue to investigate the incident. They said there were no passengers in any of the vehicles involved in the crash.
Lastly, officers reminded motorists about the dangers of driving impaired.
“Whether it’s alcohol, marijuana, hard drugs, or prescription medication, any of these substances can have fatal results when operating a motor vehicle,” “Please drive responsibly.” CHP Officer Mike Lassig said.
Ultimately, Garret Caouette’s family kickstarted a GoFundMe in order to raise money for his memorial expenses. They described the Murrieta man as a college-bound nature and adventure lover. Please consider donating to the fundraiser in the above link.
