Man Stranded on Highway Struck by Suspected DUI Driver near Mount Hermon Road, Lauro Navarro Jr Arrested
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA (October 8, 2018) – A Fremont man was injured early Monday morning following a DUI collision on Highway 17. The identity of the 29-year-old victim was not disclosed to the public.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place at about 1:40 AM near Mount Hermon Road. Officers initially responded to a report of a man stranded on the side of the highway due to a flat tire.
A short time later, they arrived and found the victim injured after he was hit by a 2004 Volkswagen Passat, driven by 41-year-old Lauro Navarro Jr of Watsonville.
The injured man was transported to the Dominican Hospital but was later transferred to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with major injuries. Further details on his current medical condition were not provided. Meanwhile, Navarro remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. He was later arrested on suspicion of a felony DUI.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash and to identify other possible contributing factors. Additional information will be released once it becomes available.
