Fred Zehnder Dies in Alameda Suspected DUI Driver
Alameda, CA (June 29, 2021) – On Sunday, Fred Zehnder was struck and killed by a suspected DUI driver on Walnut Street. Zehnder Bay Area TV news director from 1975 to 1999.
The fatal crash happened just before 10 p.m. at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue.
Officers located Zehnder lying in the road with major injuries. Unfortunately, he died at the scene.
Meanwhile, the suspect driver stayed at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. His name was not released.
Apparently, Zehnder was a five-time Emmy Award winner and National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Governor’s Award recipient, Zehnder also had stints at KPIX, KOVR and KGO before becoming the KTVU’s News Director.
Moreover, after retiring from KTVU in 1999, Zehnder continued working in the print news business. He founded the San Leandro Times and later bought the Castro Valley Forum.
Meanwhile, officers are investigating the incident.
