Plane Crash Kills Surgeon Frank Smith in Ellensburg
ELLENSBURG, WA (January 17, 2019) – 75-year-old Dr. Frank Smith from Yakima Valley was killed in a twin engine plane crash Thursday afternoon.
Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office said a farmer reported the crash in his field occurred around 5:00 PM, two miles south of Ellensburg. Officials reported that the victim had communicated his takeoff and direction from Bowers Field in Ellensburg a few minutes before the crash.
It is unclear at this time what caused the crash.
Law Enforcement and medical personals confirmed Smith was the only one on board the Piper Aztec and was pronounced dead at the scene. Shortly after, the area was secured by officers and both the FFA and County Coroner’s office were notified.
Smith graduated from Harvard Medical School and was currently a surgeon at Kittitas Valley Healthcare since 2010. Many described him as a gentleman.
There has been no further information released regarding the circumstances leading up to the accident at this time.
