Dennis Toshimi Tajiri Arrested after Fatal Car Collision near Highway 680
WALNUT CREEK, CA (November 4, 2018) – A man was killed early Sunday morning following a DUI collision near Highway 680. The victim was later identified as 23-year-old Frander Arriaza, a resident of San Rafael.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place at about 1:21 AM. A Nissan Z-car, driven by Arriaza, partially blocked Highway 24 after it became disabled. A short time later, it was struck by a Chevrolet Volt. The impact of the collision started a fire that engulfed the Nissan.
Arriaza suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
Meanwhile, the Chevrolet driver, identified as 68-year-old Dennis Toshimi Tajiri of Concord, was hospitalized with minor injuries. He was later arrested and booked into the Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez on suspicion of felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fatal crash and to identify other possible contributing factors.
