Morning Head-On Collision at Betteravia and Brown Roads Kills Santa Maria Man
SANTA MARIA, CA (December 4, 2018) – A man was killed following a head-on crash Tuesday morning in Santa Maria, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash happened around 6:15 a.m. at the intersection of Betteravia Road and Brown Road.
CHP officials said that a 45-year-old Francisco Mejia of Santa Maria was driving a sedan westbound on Betteravia Road approaching the intersection with Brown Road. For unknown reasons, he turned to the left directly into the path of an oncoming pickup truck that had just entered the intersection.
The second driver applied the brakes but it was too late. The two vehicles collided head-on and both came to rest in the middle of the intersection.
Mejia suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 62-year-old Guadalupe resident, sustained minor injuries and was not hospitalized.
The incident is still under investigation.
