Driver Dies, Passenger Hospitalized in Chico Rollover Crash
CHICO, CA (August 21, 2019) – A passenger was severely injured following a fatal rollover crash late Wednesday evening in Chico.
The crash happened around 10:50 p.m. on River Road at Chico River Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a 21-year-old woman was driving a 2008 Nissan southbound on River Road, when she failed to stop at a stop sign. She then crossed an intersection at an unknown speed, and ended up in an embankment.
The vehicle rolled over and came to a stop near an orchard, CHP said.
As a result, the female driver died at the scene.
Her passenger, 23-year-old Francisco Cervantes of Chico, was transported to Enloe Medical Center with major injuries, according to the CHP.
Neither of the two were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
It is unknown whether intoxication or distracted driving was a factor in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
The CHP is asking anyone who may have information about the crash to call the CHP Chico office at 332-2800.
