70-Year-Old Man Killed in Collision Caused by Driver Falling Asleep along Long Beach Boulevard
LONG BEACH, CA (June 20, 2018) – A man was killed Wednesday morning after the vehicle he was living in was struck by a teenage driver who fell asleep behind the wheel. 70-year-old Francis O’Brien was identified as the fatality in this incident.
According to the Long Beach Police Department, the collision took place at around 4 AM in the 2700 block of Long Beach Boulevard. A 1999 Mercedes-Benz E320, driven by a 19-year-old Long Beach woman, was heading south on Long Beach Boulevard when it rear-ended O’Brien’s 1993 Ford Escort LX station wagon.
O’Brien was asleep in the driver’s seat of the station wagon at the time of the incident. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The teen driver was reportedly unharmed and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators. It was later revealed that she fell asleep while driving. Drugs and alcohol were ruled out as possible factors in this collision.
