Five Semi-Trucks Involved in Crash on Interstate 90 [Cle Elum, WA]

Multiple-Vehicle Collision Shuts Down I-90

CLE ELUM, WA (October 1, 2018) – Five semi-trucks were involved in a crash on Interstate 90, late Monday evening. A total of eight vehicles were part of the pile-up that caused traffic in the area.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision took place at approximately 8:15 PM at milepost 87 about two miles east of Cle Elum.

The accident occurred in heavy rains when a semi heading west lost control and jackknifed, coming to rest along the right shoulder. A second semi attempted to avoid the truck and lost control itself, spinning out and coming to rest in the left shoulder. Two other cars then parked along the right shoulder of the crash. However, a third semi with double trailers tried to thread between the first two 18-wheelers and struck the two parked vehicles. A sixth car collided with one of the parked sedan, but drove away from the scene. Two more semis approached the crash scene and ended up colliding with each other.

Fortunately, there was only one minor injury that was treated at the scene.

Following the incident, the westbound lanes of the freeway were shut down for six hours while the authorities worked to clear the wreckage.

Troopers say the first semi-truck driver will be cited for speeding. It is unclear whether or not alcohol or drugs were contributing factors in the dangerous crash. An investigation is ongoing to determine what might have caused the collision, and no additional information has been released to the public at this time.
