Two Dead and Three Injured in Accident on 10 Freeway near Palm Springs
CATHEDRAL CITY, CA (March 10, 2018) – Around 1 AM on Saturday morning, two were killed and three were injured in a solo-car crash on the eastbound Interstate 10.
The victims were identified by the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office as Fernando Gonzalez and Ernesto Vega of Salinas. 39-year-old Gonzalez was pronounced dead on the scene and 25-year-old Vega was taken to the Desert Regional Medical Center, where is pronounced dead at 2:36 AM.
According to reports, six Salinas men were riding in a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe on the eastbound 10 Freeway, when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn. Three individuals were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident and were ejected from the Chevy.
Two were fatally injured, while the third man is in the hospital with major injuries. His identity has not yet been released to the public. The 20-year-old driver was not injured in the crash, while two 50-year-old men suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment.
All lanes of the eastbound I-10 were shut down between Gene Autry Trail and Date Palm Drive, while authorities investigated. They reopened hours later, around 5:15 AM. Police officials do not believe that drugs and alcohol were contributing factors in the fatal crash, but think that fatigue may have played a role.
Friends set-up GoFundMe pages for Gonzalez and Vega to assist their families with memorial service costs.
Wishing the family and friends of Fernando Gonzalez and Ernesto Vega strength and support in this difficult time. May they rest in peace.
