One Killed in Clearlake Oaks Single-Car Crash on Highway 20
CLEARLAKE OAKS, CA (March 4, 2019) – A solo-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality and an extended closure of Highway 20 on Thursday, February 28.
Just before 5:30 p.m., a pickup went over the stone wall on Highway 20 west of Island Drive outside of Clearlake Oaks.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the vehicle struck the embankment and lost control before going into Clear Lake.
Firefighters responded on the scene discovered the pickup upside down in the water. One person was trapped inside and several people tried to help rescue the crash victim. Reports stated that a firefighter had gone into the vehicle trying to locate the occupant.
At about 5:40 p.m., Northshore Fire reported that they had found a victim. However, they were having difficulty pulling the person from the vehicle. Officers called an air ambulance at the scene and CalStar 4 accepted.
The air ambulance was set to arrive after 6 p.m. Yet, at around 5:50 p.m., it was canceled and work to recover the victim continued.
Just before 7:30 p.m., officers extricated the victim’s body from the pickup, according to radio reports.
Meantime, the crash and the emergency response shut down Highway 20. The CHP reported that all lanes of Highway 20 completely reopened at 10 p.m.
