1 Dead and 1 Injured in Car Accident at Hansen Avenue
RIVERSIDE, CA (June 5, 2018) – One person was killed and another was hospitalized after a head-on crash on Ramona Expressway, early Tuesday morning.
The collision occurred around 6:20 AM, along a sweeping curve at the intersection of Ramona Expressway and Hansen Avenue. California Highway Patrol officers, Cal Fire/Riverside County firefighters, and other emergency responders arrived at the scene after other motorists and witnesses contacted 911 to report the accident.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 33-year-old man from San Jacinto had been driving a 2018 Ford Escape westbound on Ramona Expressway, east of Hansen Avenue. At the same time, a 34-year-old man from Perris was driving a 2002 Ford F-250 towing a trailer, heading eastbound on Ramona Expressway. Another involved driver, a 28-year-old Lake Elsinore woman, was driving a 2014 Dodge Charger and following behind the pickup truck and trailer.
For unknown reasons, the Escape veered to the left across the double yellow lines and into the path of the F-250. The truck driver tried to avoid the Escape but the SUV collided with the trailer, causing the trailer to become detached from the truck.
Parts and debris of a black Dodge Charger and a white Ford Escape were scattered more than 100 yards along the roadway near the middle of the two-lane expressway. An F250 pickup truck and trailer needed to be pulled off the side of the expressway. Firefighters had to use “Jaws of Life” to rescue the two victims trapped in the wreck. Morning commuters were slowly working their way to get past wreck, while several bystanders were trying to provide aid and comfort to the two injured drivers.
The driver of the Escape unfortunately succumbed to injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the F-250 was not injured in the collision, while the driver of the Dodge sustained moderate injuries and was rushed to the Riverside County Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The deceased victim’s name was not immediately released, pending further investigation and notification of family.
California Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash and officers have not yet released any details regarding the cause. Anyone with more information about this tragic incident is urged to contact the Riverside California Highway Patrol Accident Investigation Unit at (951) 637-8000.
