Eve Johnson Fatally Injured in Santa Barbara Pedestrian Accident
SANTA BARBARA, CA (October 11, 2019) – Officials identified 67-year-old Eve Debra Johnson as the victim in a crash on Wednesday, October 9.
The accident occurred at around 2:30 p.m., near the intersection of Chapala Street and West Figueroa Street near MTD’s temporary transit center.
About 20 police officers, 20 firefighters, and multiple ambulances rushed to the area.
Police confirmed that an MTD struck Johnson while she was waiting at the bus stop. In addition, a man by her side sustained injuries and rushed to the hospital.
Paramedics also rushed two occupants from the bus to the hospital with moderate to serious injuries. However, other people on the bus declined medical care.
Witnesses told police that the bus traveled north on Chapala Street before it turned right onto Figueroa. For unknown reasons, the bus continued turning. Then it drove up onto the red sidewalk curb and struck the two people before it came to a stop inside a city parking lot. The incident damaged three cars and a Santa Barbara Parks and Rec van.
Police said that officers interviewed the bus driver at the scene. There are no indications of a health issue being the cause of the accident. A field sobriety test is standard procedure, according to the police said.
Police also interviewed more than 20 witnesses. Officials shut down the streets in the area during the preliminary investigation.
