Two People Arrested in I-5 Deadly Crash
Ferndale, WA (August 17, 2024) – A motorcycle rider, 47-year-old Evan Hayes of Blaine, was killed in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 5 Friday morning.
This suspected DUI collision happened at 2:40 a.m. at Portal Way.
WSP troopers said a 2005 Pontiac GTO coupe driven by 20-year-old Collin Rene Cayo, of Bellingham, entered the southbound freeway. Suddenly, the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a barrier before it rested in the left lane.
A southbound motorcycle driven by Hayes couldn’t stop in time and struck the Pontiac.
Hayes of Blaine was transported to Harborview Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. Troopers said he was wearing a helmet during the collision.
Moreover, Cayo and two passengers were taken to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center.
The authorities arrested Collin Rene Cayo and booked him into Whatcom County Jail on a vehicular homicide charge.
One of the Pontiac passengers, a 20-year-old Ferndale man, was also booked into the jail on outstanding warrants for driving with a suspended license, negligent driving and a domestic violence protection order.
WSP officers said drugs or alcohol were involved in the fatal collision.
