Fatal Head-On Truck Accident on Myrtle Avenue near Pigeon Point Drive
EUREKA, CA (February 28, 2018) – A man was killed in a head-on truck collision on Myrtle Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.
A 24-year-old driver in a Mazda was not wearing his seatbelt while northbound on Myrtle Avenue, just north of Pigeon Point Drive, at around noon. According to the California Highway Patrol, the man first drove his vehicle off the east roadway edge and then drove back across both lanes of traffic, colliding with a guardrail along the west edge of the road.
CHP stated that the truck kept driving northbound in the southbound lane directly in the path of oncoming traffic, which led to the Mazda pick-up truck and a Peterbilt tractor/trailer colliding head-on.
Reports stated that the Eureka man was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Officers stated that the 28-year-old Ferndale man who was driving the Peterbilt trailer, Tyson Ferndale, was wearing his seatbelt and was not hurt in the crash. Also, the dog riding the Mazda appeared to be unhurt but was taken to a local veterinarian for examination.
Traffic was blocked on Myrtle Avenue because of fluids and debris that was scattered on both lanes. The road was reopened at around 4:30 PM. Investigators are trying to determine if alcohol or drugs were involved in the fatal accident.
