Construction Worker Emilio Zaragoza Struck and Killed in Spring Valley Accident on Highway 94
SAN DIEGO, CA (November 19, 2020) – Tuesday morning, Emilio Zaragoza died in an accident on Highway 94 and Avocado Avenue.
The fatal incident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on eastbound Highway 94, east of Avocado Avenue.
According to CHP Officer Travis Garrow, 41-year-old Emilio Zaragoza, a Granite Construction employee, was on foot. He was working in an active construction zone in the No. 2 lane. This area has been closed off to traffic due to the large equipment being used as crews conducted roadway maintenance.
The detectives revealed that a 24-year-old woman from El Cajon drove a Mitsubishi on eastbound SR-94, near the construction zone. Moreover, they added that the No. 1 lane remained open to traffic, with speed reduced to 45 mph.
However, the woman swerved to the right, went into the No. 2 lane, and the construction zone. As a result, the female driver struck the construction worker and left him with fatal injuries.
Meanwhile, Granite Construction stated that they “deeply saddened to report” Zaragoza’s death.
“Emilio was a skilled laborer on our Northern Los Angeles team. We will be conducting a thorough investigation to hopefully learn the events and conditions that led to this unfortunate accident. Our focus right now is on Emilio’s family, our employees, and their families,” Granite Construction added.
On the other hand, the Mitsubishi driver remained at the scene and helped with the investigation.
At this time, the crash remains under active investigation. Also, the authorities do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.
Moreover, the authorities shut down Highway 94 at Avocado Boulevard for about seven hours during the investigation.
We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the loved ones of Emilio Zaragoza. May you find peace, comfort, and strength during this difficult time.
