SUV Rear-Ends Big Rig near Powell Street Killing Three Siblings
EMERYVILLE, CA (February 28, 2019) – Three people were killed when their car crashed into a big rig early Thursday morning in Emeryville.
The collision happened around 1:18 a.m. on westbound 80 Freeway near Powell Street exit.
According to reports, a Nissan Xterra carrying four siblings, lost control and slammed into the back of the big rig that was on the right shoulder. The SUV became wedged underneath the trailer of the big rig after the crash.
A man and his two sisters were pronounced dead at the scene. Their brother suffered major injuries and was hospitalized.
The siblings, raged in age from 17 to 26 years old, were apparently on their way to San Francisco when they crashed.
The big rig driver told officers that he was asleep in the truck when the crash happened.
The freeway was closed for more than two hours while evidence from the scene was collected. It was back open roughly around 7:00 a.m.
Investigation of this fatal incident is ongoing.
