13-Year-Old Ely Soto Hurt in Hemet Hit-and-Run Crash on Acacia Avenue

HEMET, CA (February 11, 2019) – A Hemet boy sustained injuries after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while walking to school on Wednesday, February 6.

According to Hemet police, the 13-year-old boy was struck at around 9 a.m. near the intersection of Acacia Avenue and San Jacinto Street, less than a block from the main entrance to Acacia Middle School.

Witnesses said that the woman who struck the child described as a middle-aged white female adult did not stop or slow down and did not even try to help the injured juvenile and immediately drove away.

The alleged suspect’s car was described as a light-colored sedan, that was last seen traveling west on Acacia Ave. from San Jacinto St. The vehicle may or may not have sustained damage to the front end and/or hood, Hemet Police Sgt. Dan Reinbolt stated.

After being left injured and bleeding in the roadway, the teenage victim was able to make it to his school, where administrators and school health officials dialed 911 to report the hit-and-run incident. The boy was brought to Hemet Valley Hospital for treatment.

Although officials declined to release the victim’s identity, the boy’s mother, Maria Ortiz, later told a local news source that her son, Ely Soto, 13, was the victim who was left lying in the roadway after being struck by the hit-and-run driver.

Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about the identity or whereabouts of the alleged suspect or her vehicle is urged to contact Hemet PD’s Traffic Division at (951) 765-2400.

If you ever get involved in a traffic accident, do not attempt to flee the scene. Face the consequences of your actions and wait for the arrival of the police. By following driving laws and being careful when behind the wheel, you can keep yourself and others around you safe.
