54-Year-Old Bicyclist Struck and Killed by FedEx Truck near Staunton Avenue

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 15, 2018) – A female bicyclist was left in the road to die on Washington Boulevard, after being hit by a truck on Thursday morning.

At around 8:40 AM, 54-year-old Elisa Gomez was riding eastbound on Washington Blvd, when she was struck in the middle of the intersection by a FedEx box truck. According to LAPD Capt. Alfonso Lopez, the vehicle appeared to be exiting Staunton Avenue and heading northbound.

Witnesses stated that the victim was directly in front of the truck, and both she and the bike went under the vehicle after the crash. The driver fled the scene after the accident and left the critically injured woman to die in the middle of the road. It was not immediately confirmed whether the driver saw the cyclist. Capt. Lopez stated that the man should have known that he hit a person in the road, based on the physical evidence at the scene and reconstruction.

A 34-year-old man has been detained for questioning by Central Traffic Division detectives. While authorities said the man left the scene of the crash, it was not immediately confirmed if he was the man driving the truck. Police have been in communication with FedEx amid the search for the suspect driver, but a description of the driver was not immediately disclosed.

The crash occurred in an industrial area near 10 Freeway on the border of Downtown Los Angeles and the Central-Alameda neighborhood of South Los Angeles.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to call detectives at (213) 833-3713 or the division watch commander at (213) 486-3713. After-hours and weekend calls should be directed to (877) LAPD-24-7. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
