Colin Havens Arrested after DUI Crash near Valencia Avenue Intersection
INDIO, CA (June 16, 2018) – A woman was killed Saturday evening after she was struck by a vehicle that was driven by an alleged DUI driver. The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as 65-year-old Elena Ramirez of Indio.
According to the Indio Police Department, the collision took place shortly before 9:30 PM near the intersection of Monroe Street and Valencia Avenue. A 1988 four-door BMW, driven by 28-year-old Colin Havens of Palm Springs, made a left turn from westbound Valencia Street onto southbound Monroe Avenue.
There he struck Ramirez who was crossing the street.
Ramirez sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Havens fled after the crash, but he was later found in the area of Highway 111 and Golf Center Parkway, around 1:00 AM. He has been charged with multiple felonies, including vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence of alcohol. He’s being held in lieu of $75,000 bail at the Riverside County Jail in Indio.
Firefighters from CAL FIRE – Riverside and deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office arrived at the scene and affected areas were temporarily shut down for an investigation that lasted until about 6:00 AM.
