Juan Romero Jr Airlifted after Two-Vehicle Crash near Jalama Road
LOMPOC, CA (September 17, 2018) – A woman and her dog were killed Monday afternoon, while a man was airlifted following a head-on crash on Highway 1. The deceased victim was later identified as 66-year-old Elaine Ventura of Lompoc.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place at about 3:35 PM near Jalama Road. For unknown reasons, Ventura allowed her northbound 1996 Toyota 4Runner to drift into the southbound lane of Highway 1. There, she collided with a Ford van, driven by 47-year-old Juan Romero Jr of Santa Barbara.
Ventura sustained fatal injuries, and she was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. Personnel from Santa Barbara County Animal Services also arrived after one small dog was found dead in the 4Runner. Meanwhile, Romero was airlifted to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with critical injuries. There is no update on his current medical condition.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fatal crash and to identify possible contributing factors. No other information has been disclosed to the public at this time.
