Wrong-Way U-Haul Driver Causes Fatal Head-On Crash in El Centro
EL CENTRO, CA (January 7, 2019) – Two people were killed following a wrong-way head-on crash Monday evening in El Centro.
The crash happened around 9:37 p.m. on eastbound 8 Freeway at Dogwood Road on-ramp.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a U-Haul was traveling at approximately 90 mph and CHP officers tried to catch up to it but were not able to before the crash.
The U-Haul driver, an elderly woman, reportedly made a U-turn and headed westbound in the eastbound lanes of the freeway, colliding head-on with a Honda Pilot, driven by a Calexico resident, also an elderly woman.
The impact caused one of the vehicles to burst into flames.
Two occupants were killed in the tragic crash. Their identities were not immediately available pending next of kin notification.
