58-Year-Old Alpine Cyclist Fatally Struck by Vehicle near Flinn Crest Street
EL CAJON, CA (April 17, 2018) – A bicycle collision on Olde Highway 80 claimed the life of a 58-year-old cyclist, on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 3:15 PM, just west of Flinn Crest Street. A 2015 Toyota Sienna, driven by a 67-year-old Spring Valley woman, was reportedly heading east on Olde Highway 80. For unknown reasons, her minivan swerved to the right onto the south shoulder, hitting the eastbound victim on his Diamondback mountain bike.
The unidentified cyclist was rushed by ambulance to the Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead around 7:00 PM.
It was also reported that the minivan slammed into a metal bus stop sign, a resident’s mailbox, and a parked Ford F-150. Through the preliminary investigation, it was confirmed that the woman in the minivan fell asleep while driving. Authorities are not sure if drugs or alcohol are contributing factors in this fatal accident.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released to the public, pending notification of next of kin. No other information is not available at this time.
