2 Adults Killed and Child Injured after Fleeing Suspect Crashes into SUV on Cameron Avenue
WEST COVINA, CA (October 12, 2019) – Authorities identified 55-year-old Edward Louie Contreras and 53-year-old Gracie Contreras as the victims killed in a pursuit crash in West Covina, early Saturday morning.
According to the Baldwin Park Police Department, the incident happened at about 2:00 began at about 9:00 PM. Authorities received reports about a carjacking near a teen center and skate park in the 15000 block of Badillo Street. The suspect wielded a knife and demanded a victim’s 2010 Jeep Patriot before fleeing the area.
A short time later, the stolen vehicle was seen driving into West Covina. Then, Baldwin police immediately notified West Covina police.
West Covina officers spotted the Jeep at about 2:00 AM near Sandy Hook Street. They attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver continued to head north on Glendora Avenue. As the Jeep crossed the Cameron Avenue intersection, it collided with an eastbound vehicle.
The impact of the crash ejected Edward and Gracie from their vehicle. Emergency responders pronounced Edward Contreras at the scene. Meanwhile, an ambulance transported Gracie to a hospital, where she died hours after the incident. Officers confirmed that a 13-year-old boy also suffered injuries in the crash.
As per reports, the suspect was taken to a hospital prior to being booked into jail.
The California Highway Patrol’s Major Accident Investigation Team continues to investigate the fatal incident.
