17-Year-Old Kennewick Skateboarder Dies after Week in Coma
KENNEWICK, WA (May 3, 2018) – A teen skateboarder struck by a vehicle Thursday afternoon has died after more than a week in a coma. On May 12th, the parents of Eddie Perez confirmed that their son succumbed to severe head injuries.
According to the authorities, the May 3rd collision happened at about 4 PM. Perez was on his skateboard heading eastbound on 6th Avenue when a white Camry traveling south on Rainier Street hit him.
The impact caused Perez to hit his head, leaving him unconscious. He was not wearing a helmet when the accident happened. The skateboarder was rushed to Trios Medical Center and was later airlifted to the Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, where it was confirmed that the teen was in a coma after sustaining severe injuries to the head.
After a week in a coma, Perez’s parents informed the public that he passed away Saturday morning and several body organs were donated to people in need. A GoFundMe page was also created to assist the Perez family with medical and funeral expenses. As per police statement, the driver remained at the scene and cooperates with authorities in their investigation. Alcohol, drugs, and speeding were ruled out as factors in the collision.
