1 Dead in Nipomo Multi-Vehicle Accident on Highway 101 near Highway 166

NIPOMO, CA (October 15, 2024) – Sunday morning, Dylan Lossing died in a brutal multi-car crash on Highway 101 near Highway 166.

The incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on Highway 101 near the southbound Highway 166 off-ramp.

A vehicle was blocking the southbound lanes of the highway, according to a news release. About ten minutes later, Lossing, 20, of Orcutt, crashed into a 2012 Nissan Altima driven by a 30-year-old man from Santa Maria. Lossing was reportedly driving at a high speed when the collision occurred.

The Nissan had stopped behind Leticia Fernandez, 53, of Bakersfield, who was in a GMC Sierra. Due to his excessive speed, Lossing couldn’t stop in time and rear-ended the Nissan, which then collided with Fernandez’s vehicle. Lossing’s car continued onto the dirt median, striking a Chrysler Pacifica driven by Trisha Norris, 61, of Santa Maria. The Santa Maria man was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. His identity is being withheld until his family is notified.

Cal Fire Deputy Chief Josh Taylor stated that fog contributed to the crash, which involved multiple vehicles. Emergency responders, including an ambulance, battalion chief, and three fire engines, were dispatched to the scene. Both Lossing and Fernandez were treated for injuries.

Lossing was arrested at the scene. Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. He remains in custody with bail set at $100,000 and faces charges including DUI causing injury, manslaughter, and gross negligence.
