1 Person Dies and 1 Hospitalized After DUI Crash on Interstate 15 in Adelanto
Adelanto, CA (June 20, 2024) – Wednesday night, one person died, and one other sustained critical injuries in a DUI crash on Interstate 15.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a rear-end collision escalated into a five-vehicle pile-up on Interstate 15 Wednesday night.
The crash occurred around 11:40 p.m. on southbound I-15, south of Old Highway 395, in unincorporated San Diego County.
CHP officers from the Oceanside Area Office responded to the scene.
Authorities’ preliminary investigation revealed that a 26-year-old man from Chula Vista was driving a Chevrolet Colorado in the middle southbound lane of the freeway when he rear-ended a Nissan Titan.
The cause of the initial collision is still under investigation.
Following this crash, the Chevrolet became disabled in the southbound lanes, and a Volkswagen Tiguan collided with it.
Shortly after, a Toyota Camry hit the back of the Volkswagen. Immediately after that, a Kia Soul sideswiped the front left of the Chevrolet.
A 32-year-old woman from Compton, a passenger in the Toyota, died from her injuries at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released.
The 32-year-old driver of the Toyota, from Perris, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. All other parties involved sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
After the multi-vehicle crash, CHP reported that the Chevrolet’s driver, Mark Anthony Bengal, and the Volkswagen’s driver, Phillip Mattson, were both arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. CHP is asking anyone with information or who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Oceanside Area CHP office at 760-643-3400.
