Christopher Smith Arrested in DUI Crash on Highway 108 in Mi-Wuk Village
Mi-Wuk Village, CA (May 22, 2024) – A solo vehicle crash on Highway 108 injures 65-year-old Linda Bell.
The collision occurred around 6:20 p.m. west of Koinonia Court, near the U.S. Forest Service-Stanislaus National Forest ranger station in Mi-Wuk Village.
Officer Steve Machado, a spokesperson for the CHP, reported that 59-year-old Christopher Smith was driving a 2015 Jeep Cherokee eastbound on the highway, with Bell in the passenger seat.
Machado detailed that Smith’s vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree.
Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free one of the occupants from the heavily damaged vehicle, although it is unclear who was freed.
CAL Fire officials noted that training hosted by Twain Harte Fire recently proved beneficial in using multiple sets of extrication tools to remove a patient from the vehicle.
Both occupants sustained major injuries and were flown to Modesto medical centers.
Following investigation, officers determined that Smith was driving under the influence of alcohol, leading to the crash.
He was subsequently arrested for felony DUI and released back to hospital care. Machado highlighted that both occupants were wearing seatbelts during the crash.
