Man Arrested After DUI Crash on Gallatin Road and Manzanar Avenue

Downey, CA (January 26, 2024) – On Thursday, police arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI after a crash on Gallatin Road and Manzanar Avenue.

A violent collision happened shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday, near Gallatin Elementary School, at the intersection of Gallatin Road and Manzanar Avenue.

Ring camera footage captured an SUV speeding toward a woman as she retrieved something from the back seat of her sedan, parked along a sidewalk on Gallatin Road.

The SUV struck the car and then tore through a fence, stopping on the campus.

Gaby Enciso, a resident across from the school, heard a loud noise and thought a crash had occurred. Her recently installed surveillance camera captured the event. She saw the SUV in the playground, the fence destroyed, and the car overturned. “It was pretty crazy,” she remarked.

Enciso called 911 immediately and later shared the video with police investigators. “I’m receiving many messages on the neighbor app, saying it’s a ‘pure miracle’ how the SUV narrowly missed her,” she added.

Witnesses reported that the woman sustained minor injuries. Another adult near the car at the impact moment seemed to escape serious harm.

Firefighter-paramedics responded, placing the SUV’s driver on a gurney and transporting him from the scene in an unknown condition.

Police identified him as a 33-year-old man from Commerce, later arresting him on suspicion of DUI.

Despite children being on campus for an after-school program, no students or staff suffered injuries.
