Police Investigate Crash on East Graves Avenue in San Gabriel Valley

San Gabriel Valley, CA (June 28, 2024) – On Friday, three people died, and two others sustained injuries in a crash on East Graves Avenue.

Reportedly, a motorist suspected of DUI crashed in the San Gabriel Valley early Friday, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to two others, including a child. 

Just after midnight, the driver collided with several parked vehicles and a power pole on East Graves Avenue near Cecil Street in Monterey Park.

Monterey Park Police Department officers, patrolling nearby, responded to the scene after hearing the collision, according to Captain Bill Cuevas. 

Felix L., a resident, recalled the crash occurring in his front yard, describing a loud noise that shook him awake, accompanied by wind, dust, and debris.

The driver, still conscious, informed officers that five people were in the vehicle. One occupant was missing, later found on a nearby rooftop and pronounced dead. 

Inside the SUV, responders found a man and a woman, both deceased. The victims were identified as a woman in her 50s and two men in their 30s.

A 7-year-old girl, reportedly the only person wearing a seatbelt, and the driver, her mother, suffered minor injuries and were hospitalized. Witness Manny Juarez noted the girl appeared scared and in shock.

The crash remains under investigation, with the driver arrested on suspicion of DUI. Captain Cuevas called it one of the most tragic accidents they’ve encountered. 

A makeshift memorial was set up at the crash site. 

Authorities closed East Graves for about three blocks during the investigation.
