25-Year-Old San Clemente Man Fatally Injured in SUV Crash near Camp Pendleton

SAN CLEMENTE, CA (August 4, 2018) – A man was killed early Saturday morning following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly sequence of events took place shortly before 3:00 AM, near Basilone Road. A 25-year-old San Clemente man was driving his Chevrolet Suburban when it left the road, went up an embankment, and overturned before coming to a rest in the right shoulder.

The SUV blocked a portion of the adjacent lane, where a Nissan Rogue slammed into the disabled Suburban. Drivers who witnessed the accident left their vehicles to render aid to the injured SUV driver. It is unknown whether the driver exited the SUV or he was thrown as a result of the impact.

Emergency crews later arrived at the scene to resume life-saving efforts. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old man sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released to the public.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash and to identify possible contributing factors. No additional information has been disclosed at this time.
