Driver Dies in Solo-Vehicle Crash on Highway 101 near San Miguel
San Miguel, CA (September 23, 2021) – Wednesday afternoon, a driver died, while the passengers, a 37-year-old Maricela Vasquez and 22-year-old Raul Gonzalez sustained injuries in a solo vehicle crash on Highway 101.
The fatal crash happened at around 12:38 p.m on September 22, north of Monterey Road.
The CHP said a 2003 Nissan Frontier traveling North on Highway 101 may have experienced a tire failure. The driver reacted by applying the brakes and applying “excessive steering” to the left.
However, this turning movement caused the vehicle to cross the northbound lanes and dirt median. As the vehicle transitioned from the median to the southbound lanes, it overturned and came to rest on its roof, partially pinning the driver.
EMS transported the driver via air ambulance to Sierra Vista but he later died.
Vasquez sustained a broken arm and likely a broken shoulder. She was transported by ground ambulance to Sierra Vista. A second passenger, Gonzalez, had a minor complaint of pain and was treated and released on the scene.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Further investigation to determine the cause of the crash is ongoing.
