Kevin Vargas Arrested after Fatal Crash in Whittier
WHITTIER, CA (February 20, 2019) – A driver was killed in a fiery crash after his vehicle was struck by a car involved in a police chase in Whittier. The crash occurred in the 7200 block of Newlin Avenue Monday morning, officials said.
The pursuit began at about 11 a.m. when a Whittier police officer came across what appeared to be a road rage incident in progress in the area of Greenleaf Avenue and Whittier Boulevard. 34-year-old Kevin Vargas from Santa Fe Springs, who was reported to be the aggressor, fled the scene when the officer tried to intervene. The police gave chase, said the suspect tried to ram at least three patrol cars in his effort to elude the authorities. Vargas eventually hit the victim’s vehicle, and then his vehicle burst into flames.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Vargas was caught by the police while he was attempting to flee on foot. He was taken into custody after being treated in a local hospital. Vargas is expected to face charges in relation to the fatal crash.
