Big Rig Hits 5 Freeway Bridge Pillar in Sylmar Killing the Driver and Seriously Injuring the Passenger
SYLMAR, CA (July 17, 2019) – A driver was killed after crashing his semi-truck into a bridge pillar late Wednesday evening in Sylmar.
The crash happened around 11:44 p.m. on the southbound lanes of 5 Freeway near 210 Freeway.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the semi truck carrying grapes and other produce was heading southbound in the truck route, when the driver lost control. The truck drifted to the left and struck the bridge pillar, which holds up the freeway transition road.
The impact of the crash shifted the truck load forward and trapped the driver and passenger inside.
The 51-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The 61-year-old passenger was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
The crash prompted officials to close multiple lanes in the area, including the truck routes. All lanes except the truck lane had reopened before noon. The truck lane reopened to traffic by 2:00 p.m., CHP said.
Caltrans was at the scene assessing damage to the pillar.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
