Driver Dead after Lebec Big Rig Crash
LEBEC, CA (January 20, 2019) – A driver sustained fatal injuries after a sedan rear-ended a big rig on northbound 5 Freeway on Saturday, January 19.
According to CHP Officer Moises Marroquin, California Highway Patrol units responded to the scene on 5 Freeway at Smokey Bear Road at around 6:35 a.m.
A Honda crashed to the rear end of a big rig, which blocked all lanes, CHP Officer Josh Greengard said. All traffic was redirected to the right shoulder.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department also responded after the initial call went out and extinguished the fire caused by the collision, Greengard said.
The driver of the Honda died at the scene, according to Greengard.
The Coroner’s Office has not yet released the driver’s identity.
Speeding from the Honda looked to be the factor in the incident, Greengard said. All lanes reopened at around 10:34 a.m.
