Driver Hurt in Sacramento Big Rig Accident

SACRAMENTO, CA (January 17, 2019) — One person was injured after a big rig was partially hanging over an overpass on Business 80 on Tuesday, January 15.

Sacramento Metro Fire said that the incident took place on westbound Business 80 above Highway 244 near Watt Avenue.

The driver, who was able to get out of the big rig, reported minor injuries, according to officials.

The big rig was moving up an on-ramp around noon when the driver lost control of the vehicle. It crashed into a guardrail and came to stop with the truck’s cab hanging over the edge of the bridge. It was raining when the incident happened.

The trailer the driver was hauling usually holds dry concrete, but was empty during the crash, officials stated.

Emergency crews responded to the area, and hazmat crews were sent to remove the liquefied natural gas that leaked from the big rig.

Drivers were advised to avoid the crash site while the roadway was being cleared. The road has since reopened.

To reduce your risk of being involved in a collision with a big rig, always keep your distance with them. Make sure to give large trucks plenty of room, both when behind and in front of them. Be sure to follow all rules of the road, always passing on the left and maintaining a safe speed. When drivers drive predictably, it is easier to avoid accidents.
