Train Hits Car on West 19th Street in National City Injuring the Driver
NATIONAL CITY, CA (October 30, 2019) – A male driver suffered injuries after a train struck him Wednesday morning in National City.
The crash happened around 5:29 a.m. on the train tracks at West 19th Street near Cleveland Avenue.
According to San Diego police, the driver followed three other cars on his way to work when the crossing’s lights started to flash. The driver tried to sneak around guardrails but he didn’t make it.
Police said the train broadsided the car, pushing it 30 to 50 feet along the tracks. The train then came to a stop with the car partially pinned underneath it.
As a result, the driver suffered cuts and bruises to his face, but he is not seriously injured. Police took him in a squad car. After that, paramedics checked him out.
A tow truck had to remove the damaged car from the tracks, causing a brief closure of 19th Street at Cleveland Avenue and Civic Center Drive at Tidelands Avenue.
Investigation of this crash is underway.
