Woman Hospitalized after Collision Involving Van Carrying Chemicals in Walnut Creek
WALNUT CREEK, CA (February 27, 2019) – A woman was hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash on 680 Freeway on Thursday at around 9 a.m.
According to CHP spokesman Officer Brandon Correia, a Kia Sportage driven by the woman drove into the back of a Mercedes Sprinter as the two vehicles were approaching the South Main Street exit. The driver of the Kia was taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek due to complaints of pain. The male driver of the Mercedes was reportedly uninjured.
A hazardous materials crew cleaned up the chemicals from the inside of the Mercedes. The vehicle was carrying a mixed load of chemicals and chlorine. According to the authorities, a strong odor of chlorine emanated from the scene after the crash. The chemicals spilled but were contained inside the van.
The crash, which the CHP originally said involved three cars, prompted the closure of two lanes in the southbound direction of the 680 Freeway. Traffic was backed up for a couple of hours after the wreck. A SigAlert was issued and remained in effect until about 12:15 p.m.
