One Person Dies after Amtrak Train Crashes into Car near North Railroad Avenue
DORRIS, CA (September 25, 2018) – A person and a dog were killed Tuesday morning following a train collision on Highway 97. The identity of the victim is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place at about 8:28 AM near North Railroad Avenue. A vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it collided with a northbound Amtrak Coast Starlight train.
Flames engulfed the wrecked vehicle, which was thrown several hundred feet away from the point of impact. The unidentified driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. A deceased dog was also found inside the vehicle after firefighters extinguished the blaze. No other injuries were reported by the authorities.
Witnesses claimed that the speeding vehicle ignored the intersection’s flashing warning lights before it slammed into the railroad’s crossing arm.
