Driver Killed in Head-On Crash with Garbage Truck in Sonoma
SONOMA, CA (May 13, 2019) — A driver died in a head-on crash with a garbage truck on River Road early Friday morning. According to the California Highway Patrol, callers reported the incident at 4:44 a.m. near Highway 101.
The CHP said a 1994 Honda Civic went eastbound in the westbound lane of River Road, east of Barnes Road; while a Recology garbage truck was westbound on River Road, just west of the Highway 101 over-crossing, when the two vehicles collided. The Honda drifted to the right and the garbage truck driver hit the brakes. However, the two vehicles still collided head-on.
Paramedics pronounced the man driving the Honda dead at the scene. The Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has not released the driver’s identity. They are waiting for the family to be notified.
The CHP said they interviewed the garbage truck driver at length. The said driver, a 50-year-old Santa Rosa man, was cooperative during questioning.
The collision remains under investigation. Officers of the CHP Santa Rosa Area Office urge anyone with helpful information to contact them at 707-588-1400.
