Driver Critical in Terrible Crash on Interstate 435 [Kansas City, MO]

1 Person Hospitalized After Crash on Interstate 435 in Kansas City

Kansas City, MO (September 18, 2024) – On Tuesday morning, one person sustained critical injuries in a crash on Interstate 435.

Kansas City, Missouri police reported that Missouri Department of Transportation personnel located a stranded motorist Tuesday morning in a southbound lane of Interstate 435, just north of Eastwood Trafficway. 

MoDOT helped the driver of a dark green Jaguar by moving the vehicle off the highway and onto Eastwood Trafficway.

Despite the assistance, the Jaguar continued to experience alternator issues. By 5:03 a.m., the same Jaguar had stalled without lights in the No. 2 lane on southbound I-435, just past Gregory Boulevard. 

A white Mercedes rear-ended the Jaguar at that location.

After the crash, the Jaguar driver exited the vehicle and stood in the No. 2 lane behind the Mercedes, using his cell phone’s light to signal other drivers. 

At 5:15 a.m., a blue Volkswagen approached but failed to notice the crash or the pedestrian. The Volkswagen struck the Jaguar driver, pinning him between the Mercedes and the Volkswagen.

The injured pedestrian was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

The Mercedes driver suffered minor injuries but declined medical treatment, while the Volkswagen driver reported no injuries. 

The highway was closed for about two hours following the accident.
