Police Investigate DUI Crash on Spokane Street Swing Bridge

Spokane, WA (September 20, 2024) – Police investigated a crash on Spokane Street Swing Bridge, the driver was subsequently arrested.

Seattle Police reported that on September 14, an impaired driver, speeding westbound, crossed into the opposite lanes and crashed through the bridge’s warning gates. 

Emergency responders had to cut the roof off to extricate both the driver and passenger, who were in stable condition. 

The driver was arrested for DUI and unlawfully carrying a pistol.

The crash led to the bridge’s extended closure due to severe damage to the gate’s metal “backbone,” which houses its lock mechanism, control panel, motor, and sensors. 

Without the gate, the Seattle Department of Transportation deemed the bridge unsafe for drivers. 

Full repairs were completed, and the bridge reopened on Friday, but lane closures on the South Spokane Street Viaduct will continue this weekend.
