DPS Trooper Hospitalized after Head-On Crash on Loop 101 in Tempe
Tempe, AZ (August 22, 2022) – Sunday morning, an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper sustained injuries when they tried to stop a wrong-way driver who was driving on Loop 101, crashing the vehicle head-on.
Subsequently, police arrested 22-year-old Isaiah Luis Llanos for DUI and assault charges.
The crash in Tempe happened at around 2 a.m. on August 21.
DPS said the trooper spotted the driver of a red Cadillac, Llanos, heading south in the northbound lanes of Loop 101 between Guadalupe and Baseline roads.
The trooper then made a split-second decision and crashed head-on to bring the vehicle to a stop.
Video from the scene showed front-end damage on both vehicles.
Both Llanos and the trooper were taken to the hospital for some minor injuries.
Further investigation into this crash is ongoing.
