Catherine Winegar Killed in Head-On Crash on U.S. 93 near Wickenburg [Yavapai County, AZ]

DPS Trooper Airlifted after Fatal Arizona Crash on U.S 93

 
Yavapai County, AZ (May 1, 2021) – A multi-vehicle fatal crash on U.S 93 left a DPS trooper hospitalized and Catherine Winegar, 43, dead.
 
The tragic incident occurred on April 30 on U.S 93 near milepost 174, in the area of Date Creek around 8:30 p.m.
 
DPS reported that a trooper responded to a call to assist a disabled motorist. The driver of the SUV with two other occupants thought that they were too low on fuel to continue. However, the trooper said they had enough and can make it to Wickenburg.
 
The SUV driver then continued as the trooper followed them.
 
Suddenly, a vehicle traveling northbound on US 93 was seen speeding and passing vehicles while in a no-passing zone. The vehicle collided with the SUV and the trooper’s car, which caused the SUV to roll over.
 
Furthermore, the trooper’s car burst into flames as a result. The collision trapped the trooper from his vehicle, but the people from the fourth vehicle involved pulled him out. The fire then continued to engulf the trooper’s car.
 
An occupant from the vehicle that caused the collision died at the scene. Medics transported the two other occupants to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries one by ground ambulance and one by air.
 
Moreover, one person from the SUV, Ms. Winegar, also died at the scene. The two other occupants were airlifted to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Medics also took the trooper to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the people from the fourth vehicle were treated at the scene.
 
Due to the extent of the collision, officials closed the southbound lanes of U.S 93 at Interstate 40 and at Wickieup. The northbound lanes are also closed at US 93 and the US 71 junction. It is unknown when will it be open for the traffic again.
