New York Jets Assistant Coach Greg Knapp Dies in Danville Bicycle Crash
Danville, CA (July 23, 2021) – On Thursday, former San Francisco 49ers assistant and New York Jets assistant coach, 58-year-old Greg Knapp lost his life in a bicycle crash on Dougherty Road.
The fatal crash took place on July 17, near his Danville home, at the intersection with Bollinger Canyon Road.
Knapp had been hospitalized in critical condition after he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle.
Knapp Dies in Crash
His agent, Jeff Sperbeck, said “Today at 11:32 am PST, Greg Knapp (aka Knapper) was called back home to Heaven where he will be reunited with his Dad. On Sat. July 17th Greg was struck by a car while riding his bicycle, and was rendered unconscious immediately. Greg never regained consciousness. He was surrounded by his mom, wife, 3 daughters and brother.”

Moreover, the New York Jets Head Coach and former 49ers assistant Robert Saleh also said, “Greg had such an inner peace about him that people always seemed to gravitate towards. He lived live in a loving way that helped him connect with people from all walks of life in a unique way. In his short time here, I believe the people in this organization had a chance to experience that connection.”
Knapp was a longtime NFL assistant coach. He was the Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback coach for the past three seasons.
He spent nine years in various positions with the San Francisco 49ers which includes offensive quality control from 1995 to 1997.
Additionally, he was the quarterbacks coach from 1998 to 2000 and offensive coordinator from 2001 to 2003.
Forward into the 2021 NFL season, he joined Salah’s staff after the former 49ers defensive coordinator took over as New York’s head coach.
Knapp left his wife Charlotte and daughters Jordan, Natalie, and Camille.
Meanwhile, the involved driver, a 22-year-old man from Danville, stayed on scene and cooperates with investigators.
Officers said they do not consider drugs and alcohol to be a contributing factor to the accident.
