Dillon Mares Dead, Travis Smith Arrested After Hit-And-Run Crash on 16th Street in Phoenix

Phoenix, AZ (September 21, 2024) – Early Saturday morning, 29-year-old Dillon Mares died in a hit-and-run crash on 16th Street. 

According to Phoenix police, they responded to a crash near 16th Street and Camelback Road around 12:30 a.m. 

Upon arrival, officers discovered two vehicles involved in the crash, along with a man suffering from severe injuries.

The victim, identified as 29-year-old Dillon Mares, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, who was reportedly responsible for the crash, fled the scene before officers arrived. 

On Sunday, police announced the arrest of 24-year-old Travis Smith, who turned himself in and is now in custody.

Investigators believe Smith was speeding southbound on 16th Street when he ran a red light at Camelback Road, colliding with Mares’ vehicle. 

Smith is now facing charges for leaving the scene of a fatal accident and manslaughter.
