Police Officers Hurt After Crash on East Oltorf Street in Austin

Austin, TX (February 19, 2024) – On Sunday, police arrested 24-year-old Diego Perez-Ayala after a crash on East Oltorf Street, injuring two officers.

The incident occurred during the Austin Marathon, as the police vehicle was blocking a road to direct traffic away from the marathon route.

The crash took place on Sunday morning at the intersection of East Oltorf Street and South Congress Avenue.

According to police, at around 8:20 a.m., Perez-Ayala drove a stolen orange 2015 Dodge Dart northbound on South Congress at an estimated speed of 50-60 mph.

He swerved and collided with the front passenger side of the unmarked police vehicle, which had its emergency lights on.

The impact pushed the Dart to hit a power pole further down the road, while the police vehicle suffered damage to its passenger side.

Both officers inside the vehicle reported pain in their wrists, backs, and glutes.

Following the collision, Perez-Ayala tried to flee the scene on foot but was soon caught by the police.

He showed signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and an odor of alcohol. Despite his laughter and apparent lack of understanding of the situation’s seriousness, police detained him.

Online records indicated that Perez-Ayala was in custody at the Travis County Jail under a combined $46,000 bond as of Monday.
