1 Dead in Columbia Auto Accident on Hinkson Creek Road
COLUMBIA, MO (December 8, 2024) – Saturday morning, a man died in a devastating police chase crash on Hinkson Creek Road.
The incident began at about 12:30 a.m. on Clark Lane and Ballenger Lane when authorities tried to stop a vehicle for a vehicle violation. However, the vehicle failed to stop and the deputy lost sight of the involved vehicle.
According to a social media post from the sheriff’s office, a vehicle fled northbound on Ballenger Lane and eastbound on Highway PP. The post stated that a deputy briefly activated emergency lights and a siren in an attempt to catch up to the vehicle.
Boone County Joint Communications later received a report of a vehicle crashing through a fence near Highway PP and East Palmer Road. The post indicated that the driver had turned off the vehicle’s lights to avoid detection and then headed back toward Columbia.
A deputy spotted a vehicle matching the description traveling westbound on Mexico Gravel Road. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle sped onto North Hinkson Creek Road and crashed into a wooded area.
The deputy reportedly saw someone exit the driver’s side and flee the scene on foot. The vehicle’s passenger, a 32-year-old Columbia man, was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 1 a.m.
Search efforts using drones and K-9 units were launched to locate the driver, who remained at large as of Saturday afternoon. Leer confirmed there was no known threat to the public.
An ABC 17 News reporter observed over a dozen vehicles from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Boone County Sheriff’s Office, and Columbia Police Department at the scene, along with vehicles from MU Health Care and Boone County Fire Protection District.
The Columbia Police Department confirmed via email that officers responded to the crash at 12:26 a.m. but provided no additional details. Law enforcement continued searching the area around Mexico Gravel Road and Hinkson Creek, using drones and K-9 units and were still on the scene as of 2:20 a.m.
