WHARTON, TX (September 8, 2024) – Friday night, a devastating pedestrian crash on US 59 near Ponderosa Road killed 1 person.

The incident occurred in the southbound lanes of US 59 near Ponderosa Road.

Two men were repairing a broken-down 18-wheeler when another vehicle collided with them. One man died at the scene, and the other was airlifted to a Houston hospital.

Police indicated that the 18-wheeler lacked sufficient lighting at the time of the accident, which contributed to the crash. Further details are still under investigation.
