1 Dead in Ventura Pedestrian Accident on Highway 101 near Solimar Beach
VENTURA, CA (July 19, 2023) – Monday night, a devastating pedestrian crash on Highway 101 near Solimar Beach killed 1 person.
The incident happened on southbound Highway 101 in the Solimar Beach area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Reports said that the crash involved a pedestrian who was hit after a vehicle ran out of gas and pulled over along the route.
Before 9:00 p.m., the authorities received a report of a man driving a Nissan Pathfinder that had run out of gas. Then, the man stopped along the right side of the highway, along the stretch between Ventura and La Conchita.
15 minutes later, the authorities received another report of a person walking in the slow lane, using a walker. Then, a report came about a pickup truck eventually hitting a pedestrian.
At this time, the investigators are still trying to determine what happened, said Sgt. Frank Vargas with the CHP’s Ventura office.
They haven’t clarified whether the Nissan had stopped on the shoulder or whether it blocked a traffic lane.
They’re also trying to determine whether the man hit was the one who initially called being out of gas.
Officers said that the man hit in the crash was in his 60s or 70s. His identity remained undisclosed due to pending family notification.
Also, officials spotted an intact walker at the scene as well as pieces of another walker.
Meanwhile, the driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and has been cooperative with the investigation. Also, the authorities haven’t made any arrests.
Moreover, the crash shut down the southbound lanes for a time. Also, they diverted southbound motorists at the Seacliff interchange onto Pacific Coast Highway.
At around 1:20 a.m. on Tuesday, all lanes of the 101 had been reopened.
